"We cannot wait to 'sea' you soon!" That line from NOAA Fisheries is posted on the Woods Hole Science Aquarium page, above a notice that the aquarium is closed through early 2027. The aquarium is the first of several Woods Hole science doors that stay shut this winter.
From November through December, the village's evenings run through one WHOI lecture hall and two kitchens on Water Street. All of them keep a full calendar until the last night of the year.
The Science Doors, in the Order They Close
The aquarium has been closed the longest. According to NOAA, the major repair to a degraded structural wall in the basement is finished. Staff still have to rebuild the seawater systems, reset the tanks and exhibits, and bring in healthy animals before visitors can come back. NOAA expects the remaining smaller items to be finished by the end of 2026. Its public estimate for reopening is still early 2027.
The Woods Hole Historical Museum has already closed for the year. Its public season runs from mid-June to early October, but its archives are available year-round.
WHOI's Ocean Science Discovery Center at 15 School Street is the last to close. It is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., through October 31. It will be closed Friday, October 30, then stays closed from November until mid-April. That leaves a few days this week and the weekend after. If you have been meaning to take a grandchild or a visiting cousin, Saturday, October 31 is the last open day until spring.
By November 1, Woods Hole's three best-known public science buildings will all be closed to drop-in visitors. The public evenings move into lecture halls instead, starting with WHOI's on Water Street.
Redfield Auditorium Takes Over Saturday Night
The Woods Hole Film Festival runs Dinner & a Movie, a twice-monthly independent-film series that is part of its year-round programming and runs from early fall to late spring. Screenings are in WHOI's Redfield Auditorium at 45 Water Street. They usually start at 7 p.m., and doors open 30 minutes earlier.
The dinner half of the series happens down the street. Ticket holders get 10% off the food on their bill at The Captain Kidd, 77 Water Street. Alcohol isn't included, and the festival encourages reservations. In practice, that means an early dinner at the Kidd, a short walk along Water Street, and a seat in a WHOI auditorium by 7. In summer, much of that stretch belongs to visitors.
The festival has announced two November titles so far:
- Saturday, November 14: Dancing on the Elephant, 7 p.m., Redfield Auditorium
- Saturday, November 21: Fork in the Road, 7 p.m., Redfield Auditorium
The Captain Kidd's own event page lists more Dinner and a Movie Saturdays on November 28, December 12, and December 19. The festival notes that films can change and screenings can be rescheduled, so check its listings for titles before you plan around a December date.
The Marine Biological Laboratory runs a public evening series of its own. The Falmouth Forum lectures are free and open to everyone, with doors at 7 p.m. and talks at 7:30. Check MBL's page for winter dates as they're posted.
Water Street's Two Kitchens Fill the Rest of the Week
The film series covers Saturday nights. Two restaurants cover most of the other nights of the week, and their calendars fit together closely.
Water Street Kitchen at 56 Water Street has made Thursday its night. The Captain Kidd keeps its events mostly on weekends, and its kitchen is open 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday and until 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It is closed Wednesdays, and the bar stays open late.
Here is how the two calendars line up through the end of the year:
| Date | Water Street Kitchen | The Captain Kidd |
|---|---|---|
| Thu, Nov 5 | Fried Chicken Night, 5–8 p.m. | |
| Fri, Nov 6 | Band Night in the dining room, 5–9 p.m. | |
| Thu, Nov 12 | Fried Chicken Night, 5–8 p.m. | |
| Thu, Nov 19 | Fried Chicken Night, 5–8 p.m. | |
| Thu, Nov 26 | Thanksgiving take-home pickup, 11 a.m.–1 p.m.; no regular service | |
| Sat, Nov 28 | Small Business Saturday: $1.25 oysters and wings, 3–5 p.m., dine-in | |
| Thu, Dec 3 | Fried Chicken Night, 5–8 p.m. | |
| Sat, Dec 5 | Books & Bubbles book sale, noon–3 p.m. | Holiday Stroll: kids eat free, 11:30 a.m.–4 p.m., dine-in |
| Thu, Dec 10 | Fried Chicken Night, 5–8 p.m. | |
| Thu, Dec 17 | Fried Chicken Night, 5–8 p.m. | |
| Mon–Wed, Dec 21–23 | Feast of Seven Fishes, 5–8 p.m. | |
| Thu, Dec 31 | New Year's Eve, 5–11 p.m. | New Year's Eve prix fixe dinner and party |
On the table, the two restaurants almost never schedule against each other. Water Street Kitchen runs Thursday fried chicken six times between November 5 and December 17. Through December, the Kidd's events fall on Fridays and Saturdays. Before New Year's Eve, the only day both have something planned is Saturday, December 5. Water Street Kitchen's book sale ends at 3 p.m., an hour before the Kidd's kids-eat-free lunch ends. Water Street Kitchen's Feast of Seven Fishes page says to check back for tickets, and so does its New Year's Eve listing.
Pie in the Sky fills the early hours before either kitchen opens. Its site lists 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week, 364 days a year. Quahog Republic's Leeside Pub lists noon to 9 p.m. daily at its Woods Hole location.
The Woods Hole Public Library also helps shape the week. It is open until 8 p.m. on Mondays only. Tuesday and Thursday through Saturday it is open 1 to 5:30 p.m., Wednesday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and it's closed Sundays. It will also close on Veterans Day, November 11; Thanksgiving, November 26; and on December 24 and 25.
The First Weekend of December Covers the Whole Town
The first weekend of December belongs to Falmouth's town-wide Holidays by the Sea, December 4 through 6. The Falmouth Chamber lists it as tentative and subject to change. The weekend starts in Woods Hole and moves up the road to Falmouth Village:
- Friday, December 4, 5:30 p.m.: Caroling at Waterfront Park on Water Street in Woods Hole.
- Saturday, December 5, 4 to 8 p.m.: Falmouth Village Holiday Stroll on Main Street and Queen's Buy Way.
- Sunday, December 6, noon: The 63rd annual Falmouth Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade. It steps off at Dillingham Avenue and Davis Straits and follows Main Street to the Village Green.
That Saturday fits together neatly. You can browse Water Street Kitchen's book sale at noon and have lunch at the Kidd before 4. Main Street's stroll in Falmouth Village runs from 4 to 8.
Then Two of Water Street's Main Restaurants Close at Once
All of this activity runs up against the same date. The Captain Kidd says December 31 is its last day of the season. Water Street Kitchen's winter break starts on New Year's Day and runs through Wednesday, February 10, 2027.
The Discovery Center won't reopen until mid-April, and NOAA's aquarium estimate is still early 2027. So on January 1, Woods Hole will be missing its two biggest public science attractions and two of its main restaurants on Water Street.
The New Year's Eve reservations are worth booking early, since both Water Street restaurants host their last big night of 2026 that evening. Water Street Kitchen goes on winter break the next day, and the Kidd closes for the season.
